Twin AGMs, 48V Mild-Hybrid Loads and the Drain Faults Garages Miss
Every L405 and L460 Range Rover leaves Solihull with two separate AGMs rather than one. The primary unit — usually a 95Ah H8 — cranks the engine and feeds the drivetrain, while a compact auxiliary AGM (roughly 12-20Ah) keeps the air suspension, Terrain Response and stop-start alive alongside the 48V mild-hybrid electronics. Fit a fresh primary but leave a tired auxiliary in place and the weak cell soon pulls the new one flat. We read both the moment we arrive, walk you through the meter figures, and bill only for the cell that has genuinely failed.
- Twin-AGM layout across L405 and L460 Vogue, Autobiography, SV and long-wheelbase models
- SDD / Pathfinder coding is mandatory on any JLR battery fitted from the 2014 model year forward
- Standby drain is the Achilles heel here — we confirm the sub-50mA figure before we leave
- The air springs stop self-levelling once the auxiliary AGM sags, even with a brand-new primary in place
- Defender L663 hides its 80Ah AGM in the right-hand footwell and always needs a power backup during the swap
- Evoque and Discovery Sport run one 70-80Ah AGM, mounted in the boot below the passenger-side floor
The Standby-Drain Trap
When a Range Rover cranks slowly after a few days parked in the tower stack or behind the villa gates, a dead cell is rarely the culprit — far more often a control module has simply refused to drop into sleep mode. Dropping in a perfectly good AGM does nothing to cure that.
So before any AGM leaves the van we clamp the key-off current. A settled Range Rover should rest below 50mA once it has been locked for 45 minutes; anything past 120mA gets investigated on the spot. We trace the culprit — typically the InControl telematics, a keyless aerial or the BCM — and give you the honest picture before quoting a battery.
The AGM Batteries We Fit to Your Range Rover
Two OE-grade options tuned to the factory charging map — never cheap parallel-import stock.
Bosch S5A OE-Grade AGM
The OE-grade AGM built by Clarios/Johnson Controls to the exact specification the Range Rover left Solihull with — the right amp-hour rating, the right cold-cranking output and the correct terminal layout for both the primary and auxiliary trays.
Bosch S5A / S6A AGM
A dependable pick for Sport, Velar, Evoque and Discovery drivers. The Bosch S5A AGM holds OE specification and behaves correctly under the Range Rover's smart-charging profile.

The Range Rover Fitting Process, Step by Step
Four stages — usually 45-60 minutes when both AGMs are involved.
Test Both AGMs
We load-test and read CCA on the primary and the auxiliary, then clamp the standby draw once the car locks itself.
Protect & Access
A power backup goes on first so nothing resets, then the boot or footwell trim comes away gently and the vent tube is traced.
Swap the AGM(s)
The primary, the auxiliary or both are exchanged, terminals torqued to spec, the vent hose re-routed and every trim panel clipped back.
Code & Verify
The new battery serial is written in through SDD/Pathfinder, stored fault codes are wiped, and we watch the air suspension self-level before handover.
What Range Rover Owners Ask Us
The five questions Range Rover drivers raise most often before a callout.
My Range Rover has two batteries — how do you know which one to change?
On the L405 and L460 there is a main AGM that starts the engine and runs the drivetrain, plus a smaller auxiliary AGM that powers the air suspension, Terrain Response and stop-start. They wear out on their own timelines, so we bench-test each one and change only the cell that has actually dropped.
Why does my Range Rover keep eating batteries in the Dubai heat?
Two forces gang up on them here: 50°C summer heat that cooks the plates, and a reputation for standby drain, where the comfort controllers, InControl telematics and keyless aerials stay half-awake for days after the car is locked away in the garage.
Will the new battery be coded with SDD or Pathfinder?
Always. On anything built from 2014 on we register the replacement through SDD or Topix-Pathfinder so the BCM and power-management module recognise the fresh AGM. Skip that step and you will see steady under-charging, the suspension dropping into limp mode and stop-start giving up.
Can you reach my villa in Emirates Hills or a Defender out in the desert?
Yes — our vans cover every corner of Dubai around the clock. On the Defender 110 (L663) the AGM sits in the right-hand footwell rather than the engine bay, and it still has to be coded with the JLR diagnostic tool once fitted.
How can you tell it's the battery and not the alternator or a drain?
We never guess. Before quoting we run the full workup — a load and CCA test on the battery, a charging-output check on the alternator, and a 50mA standby-draw measurement taken once the car has gone to sleep.
Time to Sort Your Range Rover AGM?
Message us the VIN, the model and where the car is sitting. Our vans stock the primary and auxiliary AGMs, the SDD coding tablet and power backups, so a typical Range Rover is done and coded at your villa in roughly 45 minutes.
