What is an AGM Battery?
AGM — Absorbent Glass Mat — is a lead-acid battery technology where the sulphuric acid electrolyte is absorbed into fibreglass separators between the plates, rather than sitting as free liquid. It is still a 12V lead-acid battery, but the construction gives it several advantages: it can cycle much more deeply without damage, it delivers very high cranking amps, it has low internal resistance, it is spill-proof, and it vibrates well. For modern cars with start-stop systems, regenerative braking, high-output audio and electrified subsystems, AGM is now the default factory fit on most European luxury models from around 2010 onward.
In Dubai, an AGM battery is not optional if your car came with one. Fitting a flooded battery into a start-stop car disables the system (annoying) and can confuse the BMS, leading to chronic overcharging of the flooded battery (expensive — it dies in under a year). The other direction is fine: you can always fit AGM in a car that originally came with flooded. In fact for BMWs of the mid-2010s that came with EFB, many customers upgrade to Varta Silver Dynamic AGM for the extra lifespan and cold cranking.
Sizes are standardised to the European DIN "H" codes — H5, H6, H7, H8 and H9 — which specify the external dimensions and terminal layout. A BMW 320i of a given year takes an H6, a BMW 730Li takes an H8, and there is no meaningful variation between brands at a given H-size. That means you can pick by brand and price knowing the battery will physically fit.
A note on naming: the same battery is often called different things depending on who you ask. AGM, auxiliary battery, secondary battery, start-stop battery and backup battery all describe the same physical unit in most modern luxury cars. If your dealer or workshop has told you that your auxiliary battery or secondary battery needs replacement, they almost certainly mean an AGM — which is what we stock and code.
AGM vs Auxiliary Battery — Are They the Same?
Short answer: in most modern cars, yes. The longer answer is that AGM is a battery technology while "auxiliary" or "secondary" describes the role the battery plays in the vehicle. The two labels are not mutually exclusive — they describe the battery from different angles. When a BMW or Mercedes dealer says "your auxiliary battery has failed", what they almost always mean is "the AGM battery that supports your start-stop and backup-power systems has failed".
Some flagship cars carry two AGM batteries: a main AGM in the boot or under the bonnet, plus a smaller secondary AGM that powers backup electronics, the BMS itself and 48V mild-hybrid components. BMW 7 Series (G11/G12/G70), X7 (G07) and Mercedes S-Class (W222/W223) are the most common dual-battery cars in Dubai. We test both, replace either or both as required, and code each independently.
| Term | What it Refers To | Common Usage |
|---|---|---|
| AGM | Battery technology (Absorbent Glass Mat construction) | Aftermarket and OE labelling |
| Auxiliary Battery | Function: supports start-stop, BMS, backup electronics | BMW, Audi, VW dealer language |
| Secondary Battery | Function: backup/redundant battery alongside main | Mercedes, Range Rover dealer language |
| Start-Stop Battery | Function: cycle-rated battery for stop-start systems | Marketing and Japanese hybrids |
| Backup Battery | Function: redundant power for safety systems | Workshop / generic language |
Whichever term applies to your car, the battery itself is the same physical unit and we fit it the same way: correct H-size, brand-matched (Varta is OE for most BMW and Mercedes), BMS-coded, and warranty up to 18 months. If you are unsure which one your car needs, send the chassis number on WhatsApp and we will confirm.

Confirm size + brand
Send chassis and year — we confirm the H-size required and recommend Varta, Bosch or ACDelco with total installed price.
Van dispatched
Nearest mobile van loaded with battery, memory-saver and diagnostic tool — ISTA, XENTRY, ODIS or IDS as required.
Fitment + BMS coding
Memory-saver connected, old battery out, AGM in, terminals torqued. BMS coded with new battery serial so the car adapts charging.

Start-stop tested, voltage confirmed, warranty card stamped. Old battery collected for licensed UAE recycling.
Up to 18-Month AGM Warranty
Every AGM battery we fit — Varta, Bosch, ACDelco or Optima — carries a manufacturer warranty up to 18 months covering defects, premature capacity loss and internal short circuits. The warranty is valid only when the BMS is correctly coded at fitment, which is why we always include coding in the price. If your battery was previously fitted elsewhere without coding, that could be why it failed early; we are happy to retrofit-code and advise.
Not covered: physical damage, deep discharge from parasitic drain (common if the car sits unused for weeks in Dubai summer), and alternator-related failures. At fitment we load-test the alternator, which catches charging-system issues before they damage the new AGM.
To claim, WhatsApp us with the warranty card photo — we come back, test, and swap the same day if the battery is at fault.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything Dubai drivers ask about AGM, auxiliary, secondary and start-stop batteries.
What is the difference between AGM and auxiliary battery?
AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) is a battery technology — the way the cells are constructed. Auxiliary or secondary battery describes the function the battery performs in the car. In most modern luxury cars the auxiliary battery is an AGM battery: BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche and Range Rover use AGM batteries to support start-stop, regenerative braking and high-electronic loads. So if a workshop says you need an auxiliary battery replacement, they typically mean an AGM.
Do I need an AGM battery replacement for my car?
If your car has start-stop, regenerative braking, an electric handbrake, premium audio or an electrified subsystem, it almost certainly takes AGM. All BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, Range Rover, Volvo and Jaguar models from roughly 2010 onward come with AGM as OE. Send us your chassis and year on WhatsApp and we will confirm in two minutes.
Which cars use start-stop batteries in Dubai?
All current BMW (3, 5, 7 Series, X3, X5, X7, M Series, i Series), Mercedes (A, C, E, S Class, GLC, GLE, AMG), Audi (A4, A6, A8, Q5, Q7, e-tron), Range Rover (Evoque, Velar, Sport, HSE), Porsche (911, Cayenne, Panamera) and Lexus (ES, IS, RX, LX) require AGM start-stop batteries. Many Japanese hybrids do as well.
Is AGM battery the same as secondary battery?
In most modern cars, yes — the secondary battery (a backup battery for the start-stop, BMS and 48V mild-hybrid systems) is built using AGM technology. BMW 7 Series, X7 and Mercedes S-Class carry both a main AGM and a smaller secondary AGM, both of which we stock and code.
Do you have AGM batteries for BMW, Mercedes and Audi?
Yes. We stock Varta Silver Dynamic AGM (the OE for BMW and Mercedes), Bosch S5A AGM (Audi/Porsche OE-equivalent) and ACDelco Professional AGM in every H-size from H5 to H9. Free BMS coding via ISTA, XENTRY, ODIS or PIWIS is included. We also handle BMW auxiliary battery, Mercedes secondary battery and Audi start-stop battery replacements at your location.
How long does AGM battery replacement take?
Total time from arrival is typically 40 to 60 minutes: about 25-45 minutes to reach you in key Dubai zones, then 15 to 25 minutes for the swap, including memory-saver, terminal torque, BMS coding and start-stop verification.
What is included with your AGM battery?
Every AGM fit includes: free delivery, free installation, BMS coding (ISTA / XENTRY / ODIS / PIWIS as needed), memory-saver to preserve preset radio and seat memory, full alternator load test, free old battery collection for licensed UAE recycling, and a manufacturer warranty up to 18 months.
How much is AGM battery replacement in Dubai?
AGM installed prices start from AED 750 for H5 (60Ah) and run to AED 1,800 for H9 (105Ah). The most common sizes — H6 (70Ah), H7 (80Ah) and H8 (95Ah) — typically land between AED 1,050 and AED 1,650. The price you see on WhatsApp matches the final invoice; everything (battery, fitment, BMS coding, old battery disposal, warranty) is included. Compare against our full battery price list.
