What Lexus Owners Need to Know
Lexus borrows most of its underlying architecture from Toyota but tunes it more cautiously. Petrol Lexus models — IS, ES, LX570, GX460 — accept battery replacement without formal registration. Fit the correct-size cell, clean the terminals, torque the clamp and the car self-adapts within a few drive cycles. What makes Lexus different is how unforgiving the hybrids are. The RX450h, NX350h, ES300h and LS500h each carry a small 12V auxiliary AGM battery, typically mounted in the boot or rear wheel well, rated around 35-45Ah. It powers the computers and relays that boot the hybrid system — it does not start the engine.
When the aux fails, a hybrid Lexus simply refuses to enter READY mode. Drivers often mistake this for an alternator fault or hybrid battery failure and panic about five-figure repair bills. In reality, the 12V is the culprit ninety-plus percent of the time. Replacement requires the correct AGM spec (never substitute flooded) and a post-install ECU reset via OBD to clear the charge-state flags.
The 2022-onwards LX600 is a different beast: it moves to a genuine AGM H8 (95-105Ah) with start-stop provisions. Terminal layout, hold-down bracket and venting are all AGM-spec — a flooded battery will not fit and will not register correctly on the BMS.
